Characteristics of the Job:
Performs specialized, skilled work in maintaining, repairing and rehabilitating sewer systems and related facilities. Performs maintenance activities of the sewer maintenance section in support of policies, goals and objectives established by department management.

--- Inspect work areas to determine type of work required and materials and equipment to be used.
--- Operate and perform preventive maintenance on sewer maintenance equipment.
--- Operate dump trucks, utility trucks and other vehicles while working to complete sewer system repairs.
--- Instruct, inspect and assist outside contractors on related work.
--- Respond to emergency call-outs to inspect, maintain or repair sewer systems, pumping stations and to eliminate malfunctions and safety hazards. Other emergencies requiring response include, but are not limited to, water system repairs, snow and ice control, and storm damage.
--- Perform a variety of tasks, including cleaning, inspection and repairs to the sewer collection system in accordance with standard operating procedures designed to protect from pollution of public and private property.
--- Promote communication and adequate information flow.
--- Follow required work safety procedures, including traffic control, excavation safety and confined space entry.
--- Ensure duties assigned are carried out in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and laws and conformance to acceptable standards and practices.
--- Provide timely, accurate responses to requests for services and information.
Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by technical courses in sewer maintenance and one (1) year of experience in a hydraulic collection system; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, applicable theories, principles, techniques, equipment and operation of all aspects of sewer systems; thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the mechanical trade; thorough knowledge of sewer maintenance tools, materials, techniques and equipment; good knowledge of computer operations, GIS and mapping; good knowledge of metering and metering systems; and good knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions and devices applicable to pump station operations and sewer maintenance work.
Skill and adeptness with speed in performing activities to complete complicated tasks involving close tolerances; skill in reading in interpreting plans, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics; and skill in public relations and in maintaining effective working relationships.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as maps, instructions, procedure manuals and diagrams; ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints; ability to write reports, business correspondence and work procedures; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, elected officials and the general public; and ability to concentrate with continuous close attention for extended periods to obtain accurate results while frequently being exposed to unusual pressure.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
--- Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement, or equivalent, upon application.
--- Valid Illinois Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) with air brakes endorsement and tanker endorsement, or equivalent, within 60 days of hire.
