Job Description:
Mechanic I – 2nd Shift
Application Deadline: Friday, March 5, 2021 at 5 p.m.
Hours: Monday – Thursday, 2 PM - Midnight
Rate of Pay: $22.0025 Hourly
Characteristics of the Job
Under direction of the fleet manager, performs skilled or
semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of
diversified automotive, construction and off-road equipment,
including diesel-driven equipment.
Examples of Duties Other duties may be assigned.
Perform preventative maintenance services and lubricate cars,
trucks and heavy equipment to include adjustments and replacements
recommended by the original equipment manufacturer at various
service intervals.
Perform mechanical work such as vehicle inspections, brake
adjustments, tune-ups, air conditioning services and the
replacement of lights, tires, brakes, batteries and similar
tasks.
Assist the Mechanic II and Fleet Services Lead Technician with more
complex repairs.
Assist the Mechanic II and Fleet Services Lead Technician with
vehicle and equipment conversions and with the installation of
various types of equipment, such as lighting, wiring and controls,
radios, sirens, hydraulic apparatus, etc.
Operate various types of shop equipment such as a hoist, tire
machine, wheel balancer, grinder, metal cutter, press, welder,
oxyacetylene torch and wheel alignment machine. Clean, fuel, check
fluids and wash vehicles and equipment.
Provide timely, accurate responses to requests for services and
information.
Clean workstation, shop and equipment.
Test drive vehicles and equipment before returning to service.
Assist in receiving and picking up parts or materials used in
making repairs.
REQUIREMENTS
Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by two years
training in automotive or equipment repair and two years
progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance
of automotive, truck or heavy equipment systems; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience which provides the required
knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of acceptable practices and standards of the methods,
materials, techniques and tools used in the design, construction,
operation, maintenance and adjustment of a wide variety of both
conventional and specialized heavy equipment, machinery,
automobiles and trucks; the diagnosis of defects and failures
knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Excellent skill in customer service; good skill in the diagnosis of
defects and failures of specialized and heavy diesel and
gasoline-driven equipment; use and operation of specialized tools
and equipment of the trade; public, employee and labor relations
and in maintaining effective working relationships; using MS Office
Suite, personal computers and fleet software applications; reading
and interpreting plans, blueprints, shop drawings, wiring diagrams
and schematics; and using hand tools and power tools.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as policies,
regulations, instructions, procedure manuals, diagrams, schedules
and labor agreements; respond effectively to inquiries or
complaints; read and write correspondence and work procedures;
effectively present information and respond to questions; establish
and maintain effective relationships with employees, managers,
elected officials, vendors and the general public; solve practical
problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists; and work
varied work schedules.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
Valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL/B) with air brakes
endorsement or equivalent within 45 days after hire; State of
Illinois DOT Truck Certified Safety Tester within year of hire.
Equipment
Must possess personal hand tools such as sockets, wrenches up to
1-1/8".

required to talk or hear; frequently required to walk, stand, sit,
use hands and fingers to handle, feel and make fine adjustments,

and crawl. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50
pounds and rarely lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific
vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception
and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to
moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or
caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock; and occasionally
exposed to wet, humid and varied weather conditions. The noise
level in the work environment is usually loud.
