Utilities Field MechanicApplication Deadline: May 31, 2023, at
5:00 p.m.Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.Rate of Pay:
$25.4698 Hourly / $52,977.18 AnnuallyCharacteristics of the
JobUnder general supervision, performs skilled work in the
installation, operation, repair and maintenance of water or sewer
conveyance systems. Exercises independent judgment in determining
work methods after receiving written or oral instructions. May
provide leadership to field work crews.Examples of Duties Complete
system repairs in accordance with standard operating procedures
designed to protect the integrity and public safety of the water
supply and/or sewer system; determines chlorine residual and
collects water samples for bacteriological examination when
distribution work is completed.Respond to emergency call-outs to
inspect, maintain or repair water or sewer systems, pumping
stations and to eliminate malfunctions and safety hazards. Other
emergencies requiring response include (but not limited to) flood
mitigation, snow and ice control, and storm damage.Perform leak
detection using various techniques including specialized electronic
listening devices and leak correlation equipment.Perform field
locates of underground water, sanitary/storm sewers and city owned
electric/traffic utilities using maps, plans, records and
specialized electronic detection equipment. May use personal or
lap-top computer to access distribution system GIS maps and
databasesOperate excavation equipment, loaders, dump trucks, pumps,
utility trucks, vacuum trucks, valve operators and hand and power
tools.Install, repair and maintain service lines, curb, corporation
and main line valves and water mains. Install, repair and maintain
fire hydrants, including performance of hydrant flushing and flow
testing. Repair sanitary and storm sewers as needed.Inspect,
pressure test and disinfect new water main construction.Follow
required work safety procedures, including traffic control,
excavation safety and confined space entry.Perform a variety of
tasks, including cleaning, inspection and repairs to the sewer
conveyance systems in accordance with standard operating procedures
designed to protect from pollution of public and private
property.Document work activities in a variety of hard copy and
digital record systems and promote communication and information
flow.Other duties may be assigned.Training and ExperienceHigh
school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by college or
vocational course work in water distribution, sewer collection, and
treatment or construction technology; two (2) years' experience in
mechanical maintenance work involving plumbing and mechanical
repair and the installation, maintenance and repair of water or
sewer mains, services or laterals, fire hydrants and related
appurtenances; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and
abilities. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of the
chemical, hydrological, biological and physical sciences essential
to the practical mechanics of chemical feeding and disinfection,
pumping, storage and distribution in a manner which provides safe,
potable water for human consumption; applicable occupational
hazards and necessary safety precautions; and specific knowledge of
public health hazards associated with the distribution of
water.Skill in performing plumbing and underground construction
work; the use of and the care of hand tools and powered equipment;
the safe operation of excavation equipment, sewer jet/vacuum
trucks, sewer camera equipment, and wheeled loaders; the reading of
plans, shop drawings and maps; the use of personal computers in
stationary and mobile network environments using software
applications including, but not limited to, Arc Map GIS, Lucity
Work, and Microsoft Office; and excellent skill in the use of
electronic locating and leak detection equipment and
methods.Ability to interpret and work from sketches, plans and
diagrams; understand and follow oral and written instructions;
respond effectively to inquiries or complaints; establish and
maintain effective working relationships with other employees,
officials and the general public.Certificates, Licenses,
RegistrationsValid Illinois Class A Commercial Driver's License
(CDL-A) with air brakes and tanker endorsements, or equivalent,
within 60 days of hire.Valid Illinois Collection System Operator
Certificate within twelve (12) months of hire.Valid Illinois Class
C Water Supply Operator Certificate preferred.Physical DemandsThe

shall live within a 20-mile radius from the City's Emergency
Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 180 days of
