Parks Recreation Director Application Deadline: December 9, 2019 at 5 p.m. Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Most Tuesday evenings for City Council meetings Starting Wage: $88,625.47 - $124,075.54 Annually Starting salary and terms of employment are negotiable. **Please note: this position manages park recreation staff and works cooperatively with the Public Works Department, which oversees park maintenance staff and activities.** Characteristics of the Job Under administrative direction of the Park and Recreation Board and the City Council, is responsible for direction and management of parks recreation programs and facilities, aquatic facility and regular and seasonal recreation and cemetery staff; preparation and administration of operating and capital budgets; planning, organizing, directing and coordinating new facilities, services or programs; grant application and capital project development. This position entails considerable initiative and independent judgment and the ability to work with others to accomplish departmental and City goals and objectives. Requirements Training and Experience Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in parks and recreation, leisure studies or related field, supplemented with three (3) to five (5) years of management level experience in parks, recreation or special facilities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Broad knowledge of parks recreation, facilities and services, aquatic facility operation and activities, cemetery programs and equipment used to support all programs; to negotiate usage for leased facilities; knowledge of planning methods, site development and capital improvements project management; governmental grant procedures and administration; and public contracting procedures. Excellent skill in public, employee and labor relations and in maintaining effective working relationships; making public presentations to a variety of community organizations; advanced skill in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint software; in analyzing and solving problems; written and oral communications; completing accurate financial and operational information reports, specifically budgeting and financial reporting; and contract administration. Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality of the materials and situations encountered on the job; respond effectively to inquiries, complaints or requests for service from elected and appointed officials, managers, government agencies and the general public; identify problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and deal with a variety of abstract variables in situations where some standardization exists; and present complex issues in an understandable format to a wide variety of audiences and implement budgets of considerable dollar value.   • Valid Illinois driver's license or equivalent.
  • Valid Certified Park and Recreation Professional Certification within one (1) year of hire.
