Library Information Technology SpecialistHours: Monday - Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.Alternating Fridays/SaturdaysSalary: $21.0807 Hourly/$43,847.86 AnnuallyCharacteristics of the JobUnder the supervision of the Library Director, performs technical duties related to the library's network and systems, requiring an understanding of library operations and functions; troubleshoots the library network, computer equipment and software, performing diagnostics, minor repairs and maintenance; provides efficient and courteous service to the public and works independently within established departmental guidelines.Examples of Duties (Other duties may be assigned.)Configure, install, modify, troubleshoot, repair and replace hardware components and software for all computer workstations in the library.Administer library's Local Area Network.Set up new computer workstations and peripherals, configuring the system to library specifications; install new software and upgrades.Run diagnostic programs; troubleshoot computer equipment; communicate with technology vendors by telephone or email and perform repairs.Work cooperatively with the City's Information Technology Division to provide efficient and cost-effective technology services to the library.Keep current with software products and computer issues by researching vendor websites, attending relevant classes.Maintain accurate inventories and records of library hardware and software; log problems and actions taken; and write operational procedures.Instruct staff in use and troubleshooting of equipment, hardware and software; assist staff and patrons with computer-related issues.Advise supervisor on replacement schedule for technology.Keep current with circulation policies and procedures and may work with the public at the circulation desk as needed.REQUIREMENTSTraining and ExperienceAssociate's degree in information technology from an accredited college or technical school and two (2) years of related experience in information technology, preferably in a library; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThorough knowledge of computer operating systems, hardware installation, modification and maintenance; various computer components and peripherals; software applications; internet access and e-mail systems; English grammar, spelling and arithmetic; telephone etiquette; general library policies, methods, procedures and services and terminology; and public library catalogs and classification systems.Skill in computer operations and diagnostics; using tools related to installation, repair and maintenance of computer equipment; loading software; working with electronic components and machines; providing excellent customer service to patrons and other employees; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public; typing with accuracy and speed; and performing detailed, accurate work.Ability to learn building and networking of staff workstations; research technical problems and identify solutions in use and maintenance of library's computer systems and equipment; understand the operation of a wide variety of software; handle confidential information with discretion; exercise initiative, tact and mature independent judgment within area of responsibility; read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals; follow complex instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; speak effectively before groups; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; and learn the procedures for emergencies, disaster situations and incident reporting.Certificates, Licenses and RegistrationsValid Illinois driver's license or equivalent.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
